UK Professional Skills for Government (PSG) 360° Feedback
The UK Civil Service understands that great leadership is the key to successful organizations. In keeping with that philosophy, they have developed a competency framework to help current and future leaders understand what skills are needed in order to be successful no matter where you work or what your grade level. Mastering these skills will enable people to provide world-class service in their current positions, and gain leverage as they seek to move up within the Civil Service ranks.
What is the PSG competency model?
The PSG competency framework starts with leadership skills in four critical areas. Leaders must be able to:
- provide direction for the organization.
- deliver results.
- build on the capability of the organization to address current and future challenges.
- emphasize integrity.
Underlying the framework are the "4 P's" of Pace, Passion, Pride, and Professionalism.
A second component of the PSG is core skills. Four of these core skills involve everyone:
- People management
- Financial management
- Analysis and use of evidence
- Programme and project management
Those in or aspiring to the SCS also need to demonstrate skills in communications and marketing, and strategic thinking.
How do Questar's PSG 360° feedback products enter in?
The Civil Service views the competency framework as a valuable tool for employees to use in planning their Civil Service careers. But having a competency model is only a first step. You need to assess current skill levels in order to see where you stand and where you may need to improve. That's where Questar's PSG 360° feedback products come in.
First of all, Questar has developed three versions of the assessment: one for Grade 7, one for SCS Pay Band 1 and one for SCS Pay Band 3. Having three versions allows us to measure only what has been determined to be essential for each grade level. The assessments delve deeply into both the leadership and the core skills associated with these three distinct levels. All items are tied to specific aspects of the competency model, as well as the "4 P's."
Secondly, Questar has developed a set of action recommendations to accompany each survey version. If the assessment says you need to further develop a specific "people management" skill, our team of experts has already put together some ideas to help you get started. These recommendations augment the training options already offered by the National School of Government.
Your future opportunities will depend increasingly on your ability to demonstrate your skills. Let Questar help you assess where you are so you can get to where you want to be!
